Top Three Reasons to Memorize Scripture

Sometimes I ask myself that great theological question that has plagued mankind for years, “What’s wrong with Christians these days?” I don’t know about you, but it really seems as though we’re in a bad state of affairs when it comes to being representatives for the kingdom of God. I think we aren’t alone in this question. Perhaps Paul wondered this out loud as he was writing the church in Corinth. No doubt this question was going through Martin Luther’s thoughts when he penned his 95 theses that sparked the Protestant Reformation. I could go on and on about this topic, but with this post I want to offer what I believe is an excellent way to overcome our lazy spiritual lives.

First, allow me to ask, how many verses do you know from the Bible? I am speaking to Christians with this. Honestly, you profess to be changed and overwhelmed by the love of God, but how many verses can you honestly say have impacted you? One of the most practical ways that we have today to become bold representatives of Christ is to memorize His word. How can you share your faith if you do not truly know it? I believe there are three timeless truths that speak to the importance of memorizing scripture:

1. Whatever you think about the most is what you truly value
What we think about most is in essence what we worship, and what we worship is what we are becoming. Memorizing scripture will make you think about God and His work in everything on a daily basis.

2. Whatever you value will dictate how you respond to life
Think about it. Jesus said that it is not what a man eats that makes Him unclean, but rather what comes out of his heart. If you jump over to Proverbs it tells us to guard our hearts because it is the wellspring of life. Whatever it is that you value at the core of your life will dictate what comes out of your actions and your mouth.

3. Whatever your response to life is your witness to the world
If Christianity is on trial then we’re on the witness stand. Jesus isn’t physically here to demonstrate the gospel. Who are we waiting on to stand up and tell of the goodness of God? Of course we know that mankind has the truth of God revealed in them (Romans 1:19) but that truth has been suppressed by unrighteousness (Romans 1:18). We who have been called saints and who are now clothed in the righteousness of Christ, are under obligation (Romans 1:14) to preach with our words and our lives. (of course I wouldn't know that had I not memorized it)

My next question is, how many scriptures do you think you should know? I say don’t quit. Keep going until you can recite the whole Bible. Don’t laugh...Jewish children usually had the first five books memorized by age 10. Now imagine your response the next time your unbelieving neighbor asks about life’s toughest questions when your heart is full of the answers from God....

Upcoming Concert and 2 Corinthians 4

So I just finished going through a few songs for tomorrow and I've been thinking about what God has been speaking to me lately. I have been blown away once again at the depth of what I hold in my hands. Have you ever really thought about the Bible? I know we have our little devotional booklets, study guide Bibles, and heaven only knows how many different translations and special edition versions of His word. I think sometimes it's easy to lose site of the depth of God's word because we are constantly wading through the wide extent of how man tries to present it.

I encourage you to read 2 Corinthians chapter 4. Then stop and study about the city of Corinth and why Paul wrote this letter to the church. Keep re-reading this passage and consider the depth of the thought "16Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."
Amen...

We're going to spend a few minutes with this passage tomorrow night at the CD release concert here in San Antonio. I hope you are able to attend!

Patriotism and the slavery of America

It's interesting how patriotism can change it's meaning. Well..I guess patriotism will alway be patriotism. But what does it really look like? Officially I guess we could use webster's definition:

Main Entry: pa·tri·ot·ism
Function: noun
Date: circa 1726
--love for or devotion to one's country--

However, lately I think patriotism has been redefined to say, "Love for or devotion to the ideals and beliefs of one's country". Is it really all that different? I think so. It goes much deeper, even to our ability to discern what truly is right and wrong within the context of love. Generally if you truly love something or someone, you will do what is absolutly best regardless of what sacrifices you must make in the name of comfort and peace. But lately, America has become sick with the disease of wanting more. We can't seem to get enough of things. We want better homes, better cars, better phones, or in my case...better guitars.

Not so bad huh? But in their distorted view of patriotism many have grabbed on to the ideals and beliefs of a sick america and bought up bigger homes, better cars, and the newest iWhatever's that we can't afford. We take out loans to keep up with what everyone in America is doing. That's how we support patriotism right? But what does love for my country really look like...especially when you read news like this:

Wall Street Journal Article on the collapse of Washington Mutual

Your life is wrapped around whatever owns you. Our country is owned by slavery to the idea of more. And since most of it's people have laid aside the ability to discern right from wrong we simply follow like sheep not knowing it slays our freedom. Good things aren't bad. It's what we do to get them that usually leaves us bitter and wrecked.

So what now? For me, patriotism means that I scheduled automatic payments to pay off one credit card in November and today instead of buying a new guitar pedal I paid off a consumer credit loan. Why? The love for what is right and best for my neighbors. I'm not debt free, but I will be soon. Can you imagine the power of a nation of people who have no debt? How much could we really help those in need and how much more of a compelling witness to the power of Christ would that be?

I guess I've just had too much going on to really stop and think of something profound on my own. I think life has a tendency to do that to us. I will keep posting song lyrics though. I'm almost through writing for the recording project. We start in two weeks....so I should be finished already!! Two more songs to tweak and I'll be done.
The Starfish and the Spider

This weekend I had the pleasure to work at a retreat that our church held for staff members. Randy Frazee did most of the speaking and Max Lucado handled devotions. I want to spend a few entries discussing and expanding on some of what was said, because what was discussed is very thought provoking. This first entry is about Randy Frazee's discussion on a book he read entitled "The Starfish and the Spider".

This book is not a contemporary christian book, nor does it pretend to be spiritual. Though it doesn't discuss God, it does discuss some issues that are very essential to understanding the unstoppable force of Jesus' followers. Notice I don't directly relate this to the church. Not every church operates as true Christ followers. Unfortunately, many churches in America severely miss the mark when it comes to fleshing out their beliefs in everyday life. Traits that follow a church who is trying to exemplify Christ to this world include an infectious loving spirit, fresh insight, and a truly unstoppable impact on the community they inhabit. This is where the importance between starfish and spiders comes into play.

A spider has eight legs and a head. Cut off one of it's legs and you are left with a spider that has seven legs and one useless leg. The spider's web, though it is made out of some of the strongest material in the world, can easily be compromised. You simply find the spider and kill it by crushing it's head. The web will be overcome quickly by the elements and will no longer be effective. Now let's consider a starfish. To be more specific there are two types of starfish we're concerned with. The red and blue Linckia starfish. These starfish are unique in that an attempt to kill them by cutting off one of the arms will only serve to strengthen it. These starfish will not only regenerate a new ray to replace the one that has been taken, but also the ray that was cut off will grow into a new complete starfish. This is possible because the vital organs are replicated in each ray. This truth makes a good spiritual point as well.Gamaliel was a wise Pharisee who understood this comcept in Acts 5 when he addressed the assembly in regards to Peter and the apostles:

"Men of Israel, consider carefully what you intend to do to these men. Some time ago Theudas appeared, claiming to be somebody, and about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, all his followers were dispersed, and it all came to nothing. After him, Judas the Galilean appeared in the days of the census and led a band of people in revolt. He too was killed, and all his followers were scattered. Therefore, in the present case I advise you: Leave these men alone! Let them go! For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail. But if it is from God, you will not be able to stop these men; you will only find yourselves fighting against God."

                                                                                                                                   Acts 5:35-39

How would you characterize your faith? Do you and your church depend upon your pastor or some other dynamic individual to carry and lead your organization? or is the gospel so ingrained into your soul, life, and surrounding community that it doesn't matter whether or not you have dynamic leadership in place? What really would happen to your witness and faith if some force scattered your church and broke that fellowship into pieces? Remember that we are responsible for our own faith. Don't like the way your church is operating? Then be the change that you want to see. Get to know your neighbors. Show them the love of Christ. Grow in faith. Seek wisdom. I guarantee that your faith will become infectious.
